The Last Supper: By: Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper on a regular stone wall. He first used a layer of pitch, gesso and mastic and then painted on that layer with tempera. It was at first assumed that the painting was a fresco - but it is not. This misguided belief caused damage in attempts at restoration as the work began to deteriorate a few short years after it was completed.
There are two known exact copies in existence, both of which are assumed to have been completed by those assisting da Vinci. One hangs in the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and was completed by Giampietrino. The other hangs in the Church of St. Ambrogio in Ponte Capriasca, Switzerland, and was completed by Cesare da Sesto.

Mona Lisa By: Leonardo Da Vinci

The Creation of the Mona Lisa

This commonly known piece of art was created by Leonardo Da Vinci. Just some background information on Leonardo Da Vinci for a refreshment of the brain. Da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance man who was gifted in a number of areas, including writing, math, geology, engineering, music, and painting. He accomplished a huge number of things throughout his life, including the very famous painting, the Mona Lisa. Da Vinci never really stopped working on the Mona Lisa. Technically, he had completed it in 1507, but the only thing that ended his work was his death in 1519. It was  about another 300 years before anyone outside of Italy took any notice of the Mona Lisa and declared it a masterpiece of the Renaissance, the Renaissance was a cultural movement from the 14th to 17th century in Italy, which emphasized the study of classic literature, an emphasis on reality in painting, and education.

Starry Night By: Vincent Van Gogh

This piece was painted by Vincent van Gogh just months before his tragic suicide, The Starry Night is perhaps his greatest masterpiece. In the work, Van Gogh shows a nameless European village in the dark wilderness, complete with dampened lights and a tree to the side. Some buildings manage to emit just enough light to be noticed, but others are dark. However, the real action is what is going on above the town, where the moon and stars are lighting up the sky. Light moves across the sky in great sweeps and strokes of light, defeating the dark sky wherever it is shown.
